LET’S TALK ABOUT GOVERNMENT

(First off, sorry about not updating this blog in forever! I’ve been working on In Circuli a ton these past few months, but I just haven’t been posting anything on Tumblr. Right now I’m in the process of furiously writing up Act III, so I’ll share some of my worldbuilding work from that!)

Some background info: About a third of the story of Act III takes place in a magical world called the Republic, which is where the Alchemist parties around in for about 20 years or so before ollieing off to the City. I worry a lot about the Republic being too much like Renaissance Italy, so naturally I start taking longer showers to figure out a whole government and culture to define the place.

wow no i’ve had these two losers since forever and i’ve just gotten around to doodling them
the alchemist spends a significant portion of his life in the Republic (which is like 1400s italy but also really not) shortly after moving there, he becomes best buds with this ambitious politician dude called the cardinal (no one has a real name) who wants to get up the church hierarchy, which was essentially the main government authority in the super magical universe they’re from.
in addition to being best bros in a troy-and-abed-like relationship, their differentiating skills manage to help their respective professional careers: the cardinal is backed by a bunch of the alchemist’s black market thugs and the alchemist enjoys government protection by the cardinal (also it is really fun when both of them are like oHHH YOU WANT TO BRING THAT UP TO THE CARDINAL or YOU KNOW I CAN ALWAYS CALL UP THE ALCHEMIST’S BLACK MARKET FRIENDS…….. etc etc)

GODS wow

There’s about a billion and another thousand entities that would be considered ‘gods’ within In Circuli—and like everything else these holy dudes do, they have to give each other the most unnecessary and confusing titles and group everything into the most unnecessary and confusing classifications. Thankfully, everything works quite well within the analogy of an elaborate game of Sims.

WOW OK YES IN CIRCULI WHAT IS ACTUALLY GOING ON RIGHT NOW??

after spiritually dying and then getting reincarnated this summer (along with the blog theme), I am going to resume work on In Circuli—I’ll try to draw more art and post more worldbuilding magical fun times tl;dr text walls from now on, in the hopes that this’ll be a really cool blog years later that’ll look super fabulous on my resume

Selfish matters aside, I am done with the Prologue and now working on Act I. I’ve devoted most of this summer fixing some serious plot inconsistencies and polishing up characters so everything would be a-okay by the time school started. I’ve decided to make the story more writing-oriented so I wouldn’t get caught up with art so it’s all just really huge blocks of text  now (no regrets).

NEW BEGINNINGS, CRAZIER CHARACTERS, LESS SLEEP.

really sorry for the terrible quality of the pictures!

i have a whole in circuli character montage in my sketchbook for class, and while working on it around campus i got a lot of cool compliments about my babies and i felt like a really proud mother—one of the best moments in my artistic career was when someone told me ‘wOW your characters look like real, tangible people! but more badass! how do you do that?!?!’

yes

from RISD precollege and I am keeping this sweetass description
